Types of braces in Lawrence & Topeka

Modern braces are better than ever, which is good news for you. Every treatment option we offer is excellent and can correct many simple and complex oral problems.

Metal braces

Metal braces are the most common type used to straighten teeth. They consist of metal brackets and archwires made of high-grade stainless steel. You can choose colored elastics to add personality or clear/tooth-colored elastics for a more subtle approach.

Clear braces

Ceramic clear braces are a clear alternative to metal braces for straightening teeth. They work similarly but with clear brackets. This makes them popular with older teen and adult patients. They may not be recommended for younger patients. Clear braces are often used more on the upper front teeth. Both types of braces lead to quick results, boosting confidence.

What to expect at your first consultation

When you come to our office, our team will collect digital X-rays, photos, and a model of your mouth before we put your braces on. Then we will use the data we collect to formulate a customized treatment plan based on your particular orthodontic needs. This will include information about the movements each tooth needs to make to achieve optimal positioning. This data will determine how your brackets are placed.

How do braces work?

Once the brackets have been attached, the wire is inserted to provide customized pressure on all the teeth that we want to move. Through a process called remodeling, bends in the wire will encourage specific movements of the teeth. This process involves minor changes in the bone that surrounds the roots of teeth. As your braces put pressure on a tooth, cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts form around the root. Together with the wire, this creates negative pressure on one side of the tooth, where the bone will be removed. The bone is reformed on the other side of the tooth. This pressure and bone remodeling slowly move teeth into the correct position.

Remodeling requires constant pressure to be put on a tooth. This means that teeth will often begin drifting back toward their old positions over time once your braces are removed. Fortunately, regular use of a retainer will help prevent this natural drifting and keep teeth in their new positions.
